are Visually Impaired or Blind

The Beyond Vision team is highly skilled, trained and knowledgeable in a wide variety of alternative techniques, adaptive devices and assistive technologies for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The team also conducts outreach, community education, and training for caseworkers, long-term care facility workers, civic groups, employers, students and professionals in the field. In addition to facing obstacles that aging presents, older adults face additional challenges when they lose some or all of their sight. When vision loss occurs, individuals must change how they define freedom and independence. They must learn to find new methods of transportation, relearn independent living skills, and advocate for needs once accomplished without sighted assistance. Seniors living in rural areas of Adams, Boulder, Denver and Jefferson counties confront difficulties finding transportation options, and seniors living within urban and suburban areas lack confidence or funds to utilize transportation options. Many people with visual impairment face difficulties continuing to read books, newspapers and mail after losing sight. Still others become isolated from friends and the community, give up hobbies they have enjoyed for years due to a lack of sight, and are prone to depression and poor health.

The Goal of the Beyond Vision Program is to help people in our community with visual impairment or blindness achieve and maintain independence. We do so by teaching them skills to reclaim their independence and lives including cooking, Braille, using transportation, organizing living spaces, engaging in community, assistive technology and finding resources and help. In order to achieve this goal, we support our consumers through:

Independent living skills training

Instruction to support the development of independent living skills such as personal care, cooking, eating, mobility, transportation, community engagement, and household management.

U

Assistive Technology

Supporting access to and training in technology or devices that increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with visual impairment or blindness such as magnification, reading services, iPhone Voice Over, Android Narrator, magnification Apps, and assistive computer software such as Guide and ZoomText.

Peer Support

Connecting with peers and others with visual impairment is critical to creating community, maintaining hope and enthusiasm, and processing frustration and sadness during the transition to living with visual impairment or blindness. Beyond Vision staff facilitate monthly support groups throughout the Front Range.

Communication Services

Teaching people how to stay connect with family, friends, doctors and care givers is important. Teaching them how to access internet, email, smartphones, and news helps them maintain engagement and quality of life. Training includes connecting consumers with interpreter services, Braille instruction and reading services.

Advocacy

Staff work with people with disabilities to inform, educate and empower individuals to self-advocate. We teach people what their rights are, what the laws are, and how to be assertive in the face of discrimination or even misunderstanding.

Our Beyond Vision team travels throughout the Boulder/North Metro area.
